That 'Insecure' Season 4 Finale Bombshell Has Twitter Up in Arms
Spoilers ahead for Insecure Season 4, Episode 10.
Last night's Insecure finale was a loaded episode.
What started out with Issa (Issa Rae) and Lawrence (Jay Ellis) on a sweet date at the farmers' market turned into a frantic search for Tiffany (Amanda Seales)—who went missing while experiencing postpartum depression but was later found at a hotel—and an apparent breakup between Molly (Yvonne Orji) and Andrew (Alexander Hodge), who came to terms with the fact that they might not be a good match after all. On top of that, a wrench got thrown into Issa and Lawrence's reunion, when Lawrence learned that his ex, Condola (Christina Elmore), is pregnant with his child.
That last plot twist was artfully shot by director and showrunner Prentice Penny, who interwove scenes of Condola revealing the news to Lawrence, and Lawrence later relaying the information to Issa—both very emotional exchanges. Condola said that although she and Lawrence aren't together anymore, she wants to keep and raise the baby, which is something she wasn't ready to do with her ex-husband. She also assured Lawrence, who wants to stay with Issa, that he shouldn't feel trapped by the news and he can be as involved in their child's life as he wants.
"I wanted Jay to be more empathetic to Issa and more angry with Condola. I wanted there to be two different Lawrence's. All three of them [Issa Rae, Jay Ellis, and Christina Elmore] brought their AAAAAA game," Penny tweeted.

For the Issa/Lawrence/Condola scene I tried to have them do different versions of the fight. One where it’s blaming, one where it’s afraid to hear the truth, etc... it just made for a very layered performance. It was fun to play with different versions of the scene. #InsecureHBO

Insecure fans on Twitter went wild over the news, with reactions ranging from pure surprise to resentment. Rae knew viewers were going to be "mad" about the reveal, she tells BAZAAR.com. "But I think they'll be hopeful. Hopeful, but upset. And they should be." Judging from last night's tweets, though, the "hope" that Rae is expecting will probably kick in later.
Some memed the fact that Condola ruined Issa and Lawrence's rekindled love, which was going smoothly until her big reveal.
