Kevin Magnussen Hits Penalty Points Ceiling, Faces F1 Race Ban at Baku
At the conclusion on the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, The Stewards hit 10th place finishing Kevin Magnussen with both a time and points penalty after his collision with Pierre Gasly on lap 20 of the Grand Prix.
Entering turn 4, Magnussen attempted to overtake Gasly on the inside, while he was in the right place for the move he was not in control of his race victory and broke the Driving Standards Guideline per the FIA Stewards report, that specifies that an overtaking car has to "Be driven in a safe and controlled manner throughout the maneuver."
Magnussen was found fully at blame. He was hit with the standard penalty and was given a 10-second penalty pushing him out of the final points paying position and extending his penalty points over the course of the last year to 12, activating a race ban.
Magnussen and Haas have the opportunity to appeal the decision of the Stewards, but if withheld an alternate driver will be asked to race at Baku.
If held, Magnussen will be the first driver to sit out a race under a penalty point ban since the system was implemented in 2014.
Magnussen's last penalty points came in the Miami Sprint Race, while he fiercely defend his position after being given an early time penalty to keep his teammate Nico Hülkenberg in the points.
