Kia Is Considering an All-Electric Successor to the Stinger GT
There was a time in the not-so-distant past when Kia was at the bottom of the automotive hierarchy. Things have changed however, in particular with the era of electrification; here in 2024, the brand is building some of the most compelling electric vehicles on offer. And according to a new report from Great Britain's Autocar, that EV lineup is not only set to continue expanding, but may include a possible replacement for the departed Kia Stinger sport sedan.
The news comes by way of Kia president Ho-sung Song, who spoke with the British outlet during its Car of the Year test. Song stated that Kia is currently focused on getting an EV replacement for its tiny, affordable Picanto city car offering to the market, but that the automaker has other electric vehicles in consideration. The executive specifically noted that there have been conversations about a “brand-building” model, like the now-defunct Kia Stinger GT sedan. Such a product would act as a new halo for the brand.
“That kind of model is under study,” Song told Autocar. “What kind of model can help build the brand? This is what we are now studying.”
The Kia Stinger GT was first introduced for the 2018 model year, and represented a massive shake-up for Kia’s image. Its rear-wheel-drive platform and potent twin-turbo V-6 made clear that the machine was inspired by sedan segment stars of years gone by, and it brought genuine enthusiast cred to a brand trying to shake its Hamster-laden image. While the Stinger GT ultimately left production in 2023, it’s still supported by a decent aftermarket presence, suggesting no shortage of fans.
Kia has only continued to hone its craft in the years since. The EV6 GT is one of Road & Track's favorite electric vehicles on sale, taking home last year’s inaugural Performance Electric Car of the Year award. The brand’s E-GMP architecture also supports the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, which has been widely lauded not just for its 641-hp output but its engaging, fun-to-drive character. The idea of getting that performance in a sporty, halo car-type body like a swoopy, sleek Stinger-esque sedan sounds like a rather exciting proposition.
