The Škoda Kodiaq Is a Cheap Seven-Seat SUV For China, and Maybe America?

From Road & Track

The Škoda Kodiaq was designed with the Chinese market in mind, but that doesn't mean it won't do well in Europe as well. It won't necessarily succeed because it was named after cute Alaskan bears, but because it will offer the most family hauling capacity for the least amount of money.

Not that Škodas are that cheap nowadays. Their previous generation cars were so good that VW decided to push those prices higher in this round, positioning the brand just a hair below Volkswagens. Still, when you look around Europe, your seven-seater SUV options are very limited. This is the land of MPVs, not giant family SUVs. Basically, you can get a Volvo XC90, which is expensive, an Audi Q7, which is equally expensive, or let's say a Mitsubishi Outlander, which is a Mitsubishi.

Next year, it's going to be the Kodiaq's turn, paving the way for a whole fleet of VW Group SUVs from compacts to giants like the Audi Q8.

The Škoda Kodiak is built on the MQB platform just like the VW Tiguan, but is larger in every dimension. Its drivetrains will come from Škoda's other big car, the Superb, and don't be surprised if they announce a hybrid version for 2018.

Could it come to the U.S.? Possibly! VW Group is reportedly considering bringing the Skoda brand stateside, though perhaps the automaking giant would instead choose to bring the Kodiaq here under a VW badge.

Win? Win.
