Love James Bond? Why Not Buy a 24K Gold-Plated DB5 Model for $33000?
Incredible though it may seem, it's been 60 years since the iconic James Bond film Goldfinger was released in 1964. In honor of that anniversary, the folks at Agora Models are celebrating with a tribute that's both on-the-nose and absolutely ridiculous: a limited-edition 24-carat-gold-plated model of Bond's iconic Aston Martin DB5. Just seven of these 1:8 scale models will be made — and each one will cost £24,999 (about $33,217 at current exchange rates).
This incredible model will be available for sale on October 5 — a date that holds special meaning for Bond buffs, who know that October 5, 1962, was when the first 007 film, Dr. No, was released. As a result, October 5 has become known as "James Bond Day."
How can a scale model car less than two feet long cost over $30K? Well, it starts with the gold-plated body, hood, doors, trunk, ejection seat roof panel, fuel cap, and edge of the bulletproof shield. That's right: this model comes with many of the gadgets that made the DB5 so famous in the film, including a working ejection seat, revolving number plate, and bulletproof shield. Additional features include machine guns that extend from behind the lights with firing gun sound effects and oil slick jets that extend from behind the rear lights.
The model, which contains roughly 500 parts and weighs about 15 pounds, was created in collaboration with 007 film maker Eon Productions and Aston Martin. The gold-plating was done by hand at the St Paul's Mint in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Each example will be numbered from 001 to 007 — we can guess which one people will want the most — and will all come with a certificate of authenticity. The models also ship with a protective display case and limited-edition plaque.
Oddly, even though this is the anniversary year of Goldfinger, delivery of the models isn't expected to start until the summer of 2025. But if you're a serious Bond connoisseur with a lot of loose change, you'll need to act sooner than that: orders can be placed on October 5, but a deposit of £9999 will be taken at that time. The remaining £15000 is due by January 1, 2025.
