Mail Carrier Bought A Ford Mustang By Stealing Checks

It turns out being a dishonest mail carrier can pay handsomely, at least until you get caught. A substitute mail carrier in California, Maryland demonstrated this by allegedly stealing enough checks out of the mail to purchase a new Ford Mustang.
An Infiniti G37 runs from Florida troopers and finds out.
We didn’t even know people still mailed checks, let alone would we know how to cash or deposit one written out to someone else. Plus, we’re pretty sure banks would then have a paper trail leading right back to the person who stole the checks. But this wouldn’t be the first dumb criminal we’ve highlighted.
According to WUSA9, the now-former substitute mail carrier was hit with 10 felony charges after swiping over $80,000 in checks from the mail from December 2023 to March 2024. Apparently, Darian Smith used that ill-begotten cash for a down payment on a 2023 Mustang.
We really want to know if the guy went with a weak EcoBoost model or a GT, otherwise known as a real Mustang, but for some reason that wasn’t the focus of the local news coverage. Go figure.
The report does mention that after the postmaster at the guy’s post office found out he bought he new Ford Mustang he thought it was odd since Smith apparently bought a new Volkswagen Passat the year before. We think chances are good he went with the EcoBoost – just call it a hunch.
Sure enough, checks which went missing from the guy’s rural route in Maryland were deposited into a checking account under his name. Did the guy seriously think nobody would notice?
Once caught, he told authorities he wanted to pay all the stolen money back. That’s would be a lot harder after getting fired as a substitute mail carrier. Maybe he thought if he promised he’d pay everything back he could keep his job and the Mustang?
It’s a dumb move to steal a little bit of cash, burning yourself on future wages just so you can get a dream car. We see this happen over and over, with suspects who cut a deal or are convicted losing their job and the vehicle, plus more.
