Mazda's bread and butter is served in three flavors: sedan, hatch and fast. The first of the three 3s is the sedan, offered in five different trims itself. Starting with a traditional 148 horsepower 4-cylinder the i SV is good for 25/33-MPG city/highway and offers standard safety equipment like 4-wheel ABS and side-impact curtain airbags. The next three levels of trim each swap to the SKYACTIV-G 4-cylinder making 155 horsepower and increasing fuel economy to 27/39-MPG city/highway with a 6-speed manual, and 28/40 MPG with the automatic. Amongst other nifty kit, a Blind Spot Monitoring System, heated leather seats and Pandora internet radio connectivity become available even before reaching the sedan range topping s Grand Touring trim. The s GT carries all the gear of the cars below it and swaps the 16-inch alloys for 17s and the 2.0-liter SKYACTIV motor for a 2.5-liter unit making 167 horsepower. The five-door gains rank largely in the same order, but doesn't offer the two lowest trims of the sedan. What the hatch does offer over its door-deficient sibling is the strongest motor of the lineup, a 263 horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder with 6 close-ratio gears only to be controlled manually.
