McLaren Automotive today announced its upcoming three-seater, previously known by codename BP23, will be called the Speedtail. We're more interested in the teaser video McLaren released as part of the announcement, however. It shows an animation of the airflow over the car, and it's utterly fascinating.

Watching this, you can start to see why McLaren calls this car Speedtail-it looks like it's designed to accelerate all the air over the car to a tiny rear end. In contrast with the Senna, which is built to attack corners like a high-downforce race car, McLaren is aiming for top speed with the Speedtail. McLaren wants to exceed the 243-mph top speed of its legendary F1, and to do so, it has to make something that slips through the air cleanly.

Like the F1 before it, McLaren will only build 106 examples of the Speedtail. McLaren calls it a "Hyper-GT," and it'll use the same delta-formation three-seat layout as the F1.

The teaser video ends with "October 2018" shown on the screen, so perhaps that's when we'll see the Speedtail. We can't wait.
