Yahoo Autos McLaren Is Considering a One-Make Racing Series for the 570S GT4
The McLaren 570S GT4 is designed to get more people behind the wheel of a McLaren race car. It might cost a little over $220,000, but that's a relatively affordable entry into the world of GT racing. Currently, a single 570S GT4 is running in the British GT Championship before the customer cars are delivered, but McLaren is considering big things for its baby racer.
Specifically, McLaren is mulling over a single-make race series for the 570S GT4, according to an Autosport report. It's not a done deal yet, but Autosport says many important people at McLaren, like chairman Ron Dennis, would like to see it happen.
"We've built the GT4 car and we're thinking that it would be a good base for a one-make series, and also that something like that would be a good thing to do," said McLaren GT managing director Andrew Kirklady in an interview with Autosport. "But that's as far as it has gone right now."
Dennis told Autosport's sister publication F1 Racing that McLaren Automotive would "probably [do] a one-make racing series of some kind."
Three of McLaren's main rivals offer one-make racing series like this: There's Ferrari Challenge, Lamborghini Supertrofeo, and the long-running Porsche Carrera Cup. These series create good publicity for the brands while also generating revenue.
The 570S GT4 looks like it'll start making its way to customer hands next year, so perhaps the one-make series could start shortly afterwards. We'll just have to wait and see.
