The McLaren W1 is coming: Everything we know about the P1’s revolutionary successor
McLaren Automotive has officially announced the latest addition to its legendary "1" series of supercars: the McLaren W1. Besides the name, everything else about the highly anticipated new car is still under wraps until an October 6th reveal, according to a statement from McLaren.
The W1 launch date is significant for McLaren, as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of McLaren’s first Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship and Emerson Fittipaldi’s 1974 World Drivers’ Championship victory with the brand.
A New Milestone in McLaren’s Hypercar Legacy
The McLaren W1 joins a family of supercars known for their innovation and performance, each introducing new technology usually only seen on Formula 1 tracks.
The McLaren F1, first released in 1992, set a new benchmark for performance cars with its central driving position, lightweight carbon fiber chassis, and a naturally aspirated V12 engine that gave it world-record speed credentials. In the 30-plus years since its release, faster production cars have come on the market. But, the F1 has held onto its title as the fastest naturally aspirated road car ever built, according to McLaren.
In 2013, McLaren introduced the P1, a revolutionary hypercar that was part of the "Holy Trinity" of new, hybrid hypercars alongside the Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder. The P1 boasted a twin-turbo V8 hybrid powertrain producing 903 horsepower, along with Formula 1-derived tech like active aerodynamics and brake steer.
The Evolution of McLaren’s ‘1’ Series Supercars
Now, over a decade since the P1’s debut, McLaren aims to create another era-defining hypercar with the W1. With less than 500 “1” cars produced since the F1’s debut over 30 years ago, the W1 is joining an incredibly exclusive club.
“The McLaren W1 is defined by real supercar principles and is the ultimate expression of a McLaren supercar. Born of our rich racing history and World Championship mindset, W1 pushes the boundaries of performance and is worthy of the ‘1’ name. Like its predecessors the F1 and McLaren P1™, W1 defines the rulebook of a real supercar,” said McLaren CEO Michael Leiters.
Powertrain Innovations: What to Expect from the McLaren W1
Although details about the W1’s exact specifications are still under wraps, there’s speculation that it will feature a hybrid V8 powertrain, marking the next step in McLaren’s hybrid journey.
While the P1 boasts an impressive 903 horsepower, it’s likely that the W1 will raise the bar even higher with a combination of electrification and aerodynamics to achieve unprecedented speed and handling.

The W1’s Role in McLaren’s 50-Year Racing History
The timing of the W1’s release is no accident, aligning perfectly with McLaren’s 50-year celebration of their first Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship win. The W1, while a hypercar built for the road, pays homage to McLaren’s dominance on the track, acting as a bridge between the brand’s racing heritage and its future.
McLaren W1 and the Future of Hybrid Hypercars
The McLaren W1 arrives at a time when competition in the hypercar market is fiercer than ever. Last June, Porsche teased its upcoming fully electric hypercar, the Mission X, while Ferrari is developing a new hypercar to follow up the LaFerrari. While the last Holy Trinity of hypercars all featured hybrid powertrains, it will be interesting to see how enthusiasts and prospective buyers react to the diverging technology powering this new generation.
With its cutting-edge powertrain and meticulous engineering, the W1 is positioned to set new standards in the hypercar space and reinforce McLaren’s position as a leader in performance and innovation.
