Meet the New 580-Horsepower Aston Martin Vanquish S

From Road & Track

The second-generation Aston Martin Vanquish has been around since 2012, receiving a few tweaks and updates along the way. And while Aston Martin continues to insist that it's a "super grand tourer" instead of a supercar, it's still no slouch in the performance department. Its 6.0-liter naturally aspirated V12 makes 568 horsepower and can launch it to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. But for owners who want a little more performance, Aston Martin has just announced the Vanquish S.

As with the last Vanquish S, you won't get a huge performance boost over the regular car. Power output has only been bumped up to 580 horsepower, but when combined with a modified intake, Aston Martin promises you'll be able to feel the difference. The eight-speed transmission has also been programmed to deliver quicker shifts. Whether or not these changes will impact acceleration in a measurable way remains to be seen, though.

To improve handling when the road gets twisty, Aston Martin says the suspension, dampers, spring rates, and anti-roll bar have all been reworked. But the Vanquish S still isn't a hardcore performance car. Its comfort mode is said to be even comfier, and its transmission is more refined at low speeds.

Visually, you'll be able to spot the Vanquish S by its carbon-fiber aero package. Both the splitter and diffuser have been modified to reduce front-end lift without significantly increasing drag. Along with some of the other body work, Aston Martin says the quad exhaust tips have also been given a sportier appearance.

Inside, the Vanquish S gets new quilted leather and a few new finishes. But since this it's an Aston Martin, you can pick from several (presumably expensive) packages to tweak both the interior and exterior to your liking. And while Apple CarPlay is available, there's still no Android Auto support. Bummer.

Expect the Aston Martin Vanquish S to arrive in the U.S. next month with a starting price of $312,950.
