Meet the United States Postal Service's New Delivery Truck
The United States Postal Service announced Tuesday it has contracted Oshkosh Defense, a military and tactical vehicle manufacturer, to build its next generation of delivery trucks. The Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV) will be a purpose-built, right-hand drive vehicle that can be equipped with either internal combustion power or fully electric powertrains.
The initial $482 million investment means Oshkosh will design, build, and deliver anywhere between 50,000 to 165,000 examples of the NGDV over the next 10 years. The investment is part of a soon-to-be-released multi-billion-dollar 10-year plan meant to make the USPS "preferred delivery service provider for the American public," according to a release.
The USPS hasn't revealed detailed what ICE or electric powertrains will be available on the NGDV, but says they can be retrofitted with new equipment to keep up with advancements in tech. That initial investment includes funding for a facility and tooling for manufacturing in the United States.
The First NGDVs are expected to start delivering mail sometime in 2023. Considering many of the 190,000 mail carrier trucks currently in service have been in operation for 30-plus years, they can't come soon enough.
