The 2006 CLS-Class is a 4-door, 4-passenger luxury sedan, available in two trims, the CLS500 4-Door Coupe and the CLS55 AMG 4-Door Coupe. The 2006 CLS-Class's closest competitors include the Audi A8, the Jaguar XJ-Series, and the Volkswagen Phaeton.

Upon introduction, the CLS500 4-Door Coupe is equipped with a standard 5.0-liter, V8, 302-horsepower engine that achieves 16-mpg in the city and 22-mpg on the highway. A 7-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The CLS55 AMG 4-Door Coupe is equipped with a standard 5.5-liter, V8, 469-horsepower, supercharged engine that achieves 14-mpg in the city and 20-mpg on the highway. A 5-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard.
