Mercedes-Benz fit portal axles to its legendary G-Wagen to make it even better off road, but incidentally, the company created a better road car too. That's what Top Gear's Chris Harris concluded after driving a G500 4x4 Squared in the UK. It actually fixes a lot of what's wrong about the AMG G63 and G65.

All that extra suspension travel afforded by the portal axles gives the 4x4 Squared a genuinely great ride, whereas other G-Wagens can feel pretty harsh. And while the flared fenders make the 4x4 Squared wider than other Gs, this truck is actually fairly narrow to begin with, so it's not impossible to navigate small roads.

The 4x4 Squared is impressively quick too, thanks to Mercedes' new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which pumps out 416 hp in the Euro-spec G500. This is actually a retuned version of Mercedes-AMG's 4.0-liter motor, and it sounds nearly as good as those that come from Affalterbach.

It's sort of amazing that something that looks like this actually works as a street car. It makes the idea of owning a G500 4x4 Squared that much more appealing.
