  • Mercedes-Maybach is launching a pair of special editions at Monterey Car Week, and one is this Nordic Glow S-class, to be sold only in the U.S.

  • Only 50 Edition Nordic Glow S680s will be made, each one the best work that Mercedes's customization specialists can build.

  • The two-tone paintwork is said to be inspired by the aurora borealis.

Exclusivity is baked right into any Mercedes-Maybach product, but this evening at Pebble Beach, Mercedes is premiering an even rarer model. Limited to just 50 examples, all of them bound for the U.S. market, the S680 Edition Nordic Glow is inspired by the Northern Lights and comes with custom touches from Mercedes's Manufaktur individualization department inside and out.

The Mercedes-Maybach S680 is already a swishy limousine with few rivals, a riposte to the likes of the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Just shy of 18 feet long, with a 133.7-inch wheelbase, it's the most opulent S-class in the range, with a silky-smooth twin-turbocharged V-12 under the hood. Peak power on offer is 621, with a sprint to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, but physical performance is almost an irrelevance with a Maybach.

Instead, this car is all about presence and opulence. The Edition Nordic Glow delivers on the former when gliding up at the red carpet with two-tone paint and 21-inch wheels patterned like champagne flutes. The paintwork is a deep metallic violet up top over gleaming white below, intended to evoke seeing the aurora borealis dancing over a frost-blasted northern landscape.

Things are far cozier inside, starting with a four-seat configuration that's like flying first class. With leather-lined folding rear seat tables, deep pile carpets, and even a refrigerator and Maybach-branded champagne flutes, it's a machine designed around those who prefer to be chauffeured to their destination. The Nordic Edition twist on these luxurious surroundings features grey nappa leather and herringbone-patterned dark walnut.

Pebble Beach, with its crowds of the well-heeled, is an ideal location for Mercedes to show off its latest Maybach model. Not only will the limited run of 50 soon be snapped up, but the Nordic Glow is a nice way to demonstrate the customization capabilities of the Manufaktur division. You can no longer get a Maybach edition in the new G-class, but you could get one with custom touches to your own specification.

The S680 Edition Nordic Glow should arrive at dealers later in the year, with a price of $339,000. That's nearly three times the price of a standard S-class, but then again, part of the appeal of a black Mercedes S-class is in its anonymity. The Maybach Edition Nordic Glow is built to make onlookers turn their heads, just as they would upon seeing the Northern Lights.
