Merritt Island High School was temporarily on lockdown Thursday afternoon due to an unspecified incident at a nearby AT&T store, officials said.

At about 3:25 p.m., there was an incident in the parking lot of the AT&T store at 1070 North Courtenay Parkway, less than 0.2 miles from the high school, according to an email sent to parents by Merritt Island High School Principal James Rehmer.

While Rehmer did not specify what took place, he said the school and students were not involved.

"I want to reiterate the incident was isolated and DID NOT involve our school OR students," he said.

School officials and Brevard County Sheriff's Office placed the school in lockdown until the area was secured, Rehmer said.

District spokesperson Russell Bruhn said while there was a law enforcement presence near the school, prompting the school to go on a brief shelter in place order, there was no police activity at the school itself.
