The future is electric – we keep getting told that, even about our classic cars, but now Mopar is also pushing the message with its latest SEMA 2024 build. The build is being used to promote the Mopar e-Crate propulsion package, which is supposed to allow you to drop an electric powertrain into classic or modern rides with ease.
One city government splurges on electric cars and people aren’t happy about it.
Called the Plymouth GTX Electromod Concept, it showcases what could be if the e-Crate comes to market, or at least that’s what a press release claims. That’s right, Mopar isn’t committing to releasing the electrification in a box solution to customers, at least not yet. Perhaps it’s waiting to see how this concept is received at SEMA.
Considering how much hate is being flung at the electrification of the Dodge lineup, it’s a gutsy move to roll this classic restomod out and call it a “zero-emission muscle car.” Or maybe it’s just tone deaf? After all, we’re pretty sure plenty of emissions were generated manufacturing the kit and to generate electricity for recharging the batteries.
Yet again, Stellantis seems to just not get it, or maybe it doesn’t want to? It used to be that Dodge, Ram, and Jeep were the cool kids in the auto industry making compelling products for enthusiasts. Now we have… this.
Sure, a lot of journalists and the “right people” are all frothing at the mouth over this SEMA Show concept. Or at least they’re acting like they’re super excited for it. But we wonder if Mopar knows rolling the e-Crate out into the open market will be met with apathy at best.
At least this Plymouth has some cool bodywork done to it, like the custom-shaved body-color bumpers and Satin Black trim. Plus it wears a one-of-a-kind custom carbon-fiber hood featuring functional dual air extractors. All that combined with the carbon-fiber front splitter, low-profile rear spoiler, lowered stance, and BTG Vintage Bronze forged magnesium wheels makes for a great appearance we know a lot of enthusiasts would dig.
But the electrification is a turn-off. People are sick of the government and auto industry trying to force them to buy an EV. Yet it’s like automakers just can’t help but keep celebrating the electrification movement.
This build would’ve been so much cooler with a Hellcat or Hellephant under the hood. What a missed opportunity.
