If you were excited to try getting your hands on a Ford Mustang GTD only to realize the $325,000 base price is way out of your reach, you’re hardly alone. The supercar is meant to be exclusive, not for the everyday pony car fan, which is probably why Ford is also giving owners the option to reserve their unique paint color so nobody else can order it.
Road rager gets a felony charge under new law.
That’s right, Ford is letting customers engage in a little color gatekeeping with their Mustang GTD. A recent press release touts the Extended Color Palette, which allows shoppers to go beyond the six standard paint colors and choose from thousands of possibilities.
This is all done with the assistance of the Mustang GTD Concierge team, something you usually only see for ultra-luxury brands like Bentley or Rolls-Royce. They act as guides through the entire personalization process of each car.
A customer could potentially get any hue they want, with some limitations. Ford delivers a sample so ensure it’s exactly what’s wanted before the car is painted.
But this is where it gets interesting: there’s an Exclusive Extended Color Palette Lock-Out Option. This is how you get a specific hue of paint and keep anyone else from copying you.
We imagine this comes at a steep price, but Ford hasn’t said how much the option costs. Considering people who are buying the Mustang GTD are popping out $325,000-plus on the car, we bet most of them will think the fee is nominal even if it costs what most of us pay for a vehicle these days.
After all, showing up at the private track or a concours where some guy has the same color Ford Mustang GTD would be the ultimate embarrassment. This should give you a clue about who’s buying these 800-plus-horsepower Mustangs.
