Ford can't put a Mustang badge on an SUV without some performance to back it up. Today, the company released preliminary specs on the Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition, and it seems like Ford is squaring up for an electric crossover fight with the Tesla Model Y Performance.

The headline stats: 480 horsepower, 642 lb-ft of torque, and a target 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds. Tesla doesn't release hp or torque figures for any of its cars, but the Model Y Performance has an identical 0-60 mph time as the hottest Mach E. Ford will have to concede the range battle to Tesla, however, as the Mach-E GT Performance Edition has an estimated range of 235 miles, while the Model Y Performance has an EPA-certified range of 303 miles.

Ford also gave the Performance Edition upgraded brakes with massive 19-inch front rotors, and unique 20-inch wheels. Also standard are MagneRide dampers, which work a treat in the gas-powered Mustang, so they're a welcome inclusion for the Mach-E. There's also some unique trim pieces and badging inside and out, so there's no doubt that this is the quickest Mustang Mach-E.

No price for the Performance Edition package has been announced yet, but it's worth noting that the Mach-E GT will cost $61,600 (not including a $7500 federal EV tax credit). Tesla prices the Model Y Performance just under $60,000, so when you add the Performance Edition package to the Mach-E, it'll end up being a bit more expensive, though you can no longer get the federal tax credit with a Tesla. Regardless, it should be a good fight.
