New Hanover ready to erase last season's early exit

The Wildcats (23-2, 16-0) completed another perfect conference record this winter, recently defeating Hoggard in the Mideastern Conference Championship 53-52. New Hanover will have high hopes this postseason after falling 61-56 to Panther Creek in last winter's 4A East second round.

However, as coach Kirk Angel has stated all season, the Wildcats don't have the typical makeup of a championship team.

Starting three sophomores and lacking significant size, New Hanover is a scrappy team that dominates possession and typically doesn't score a lot of points.

There's been little competition for coach Boubacar Aw's team the past two years as the Vikings have gone 50-6, including 28-0 in conference play. Much like the boys team at New Hanover, the Vikings (25-2, 14-0 MEC) are eagerly searching for a deep postseason run this winter.

On a roster filled with talent and size, Hoggard can shoot the 3-pointer just as well as it can defend. Seniors Anya Massey, Laney Scoggins and Anna-Hollis Pitt have proven to be among the Mideastern Conference's best players, and each is in full form entering the postseason.

The Titans (22-4, 11-0) have been the runaway favorite in the Waccamaw Conference this season.

Led by junior Myron Mckoy, Trask has a host of experience and talent that could lead to significant results in the 2A bracket.

The Titans' 16-game winning streak dates back to early January, and they'll hope to keep it going this postseason.

Ashley boys team eying upset

Coming in near the bottom of this year's 4A East playoff rankings, the Screaming Eagles (12-3, 7-7 MEC) aren't on many teams' radars. However, the team has displayed tough fight in the Mideastern Conference this season, losing to Hoggard and New Hanover by less than 10 points.

Led by Coen Locklear and Quinn Bentley, the Screaming Eagles might not have a state title in them this season, but don't be surprised if they pull an early-round upset.
