Cadillac CT6 Gets 64-Percent Aluminum Structure That Saves 198 Pounds

With just weeks left until the Cadillac CT6’s unveiling ahead of the 2015 New York Auto Show, we don’t have long to wait to find out all of the details on the new flagship American luxury sedan. But as you’d expect, Cadillac is prepping us with some of the nitty gritty details beforehand.

Today, we learn that the structure of the CT6 will use 13 different materials to save 198 pounds versus a mostly-steel body in white.

How much of those other materials are used? Sixty-four percent of the CT6’s structure is aluminum. All of the body panels are aluminum; a large portion of the body structure itself is too. Much of the rest of the materials are a variety of high-strength steels.

Cadillac’s new president Johan De Nysschen is setting high expectations for the car, saying, ““This is the rocket science of automobile construction and manufacturing today. With the CT6, we used high-strength aluminum and high-strength steels; lightweight chassis components; we integrate aluminum and steel where it makes sense; we eliminate every gram of mass possible, while achieving world-class performance.”

Of course, not all of that is corporate smoke: Cadillac has secured 21 new patents for the CT6’s structure.

Combining high-pressure die-cast components with aluminum sheets and extrusions, as well as steel close-out panels on the lower portion, the CT6 promises a “bank vault-quiet cabin” without weight-adding sound damping material.
