Recall Roundup: GM Recalls Continue, Automaker to Repair Another 1 Million-Plus Vehicles

During the past week, automakers recalled a grand total of approximately 1,660,000 vehicles--the majority from General Motors--for a variety of reasons. Most of the recalls concern air bag deployment. Details are below, in alphabetical order by manufacturer.

BMW: Various 2000-2006 Vehicles

BMW is recalling 573,935 model-year 2000 323i sedans, coupes, convertibles, and Sport Wagons; 2000 328i sedans and coupes; 2001-2005 325i sedans, coupes, convertibles, and Sport Wagons; 2001-2005 325xi sedans and Sport Wagons; 2006 325i coupes and convertibles; 2001-2006 330i sedans, coupes, and convertibles; 2001-2005 330xi sedans; and 2001-2006 M3 coupes and convertibles to address a safety defect in the passenger-side front air bag that may produce excessive internal pressure. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure could cause rupturing of the inflator resulting in metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the passenger-seat occupant or other occupants.

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger-side frontal air bag, free of charge. An interim notice will be mailed to owners in August 2014. A second notice will be mailed when an adequate supply of parts is available, currently anticipated to be in October 2014. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com, and may refer to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) campaign number 14V428000.

2013-2014 Cadillac ATS

2014 Cadillac CTS

General Motors (GM) is recalling 90,750 model-year 2013-2014 Cadillac ATS vehicles manufactured April 23, 2012, to March 20, 2014, and 2014 Cadillac CTS vehicles manufactured June 10, 2013, to March 20, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the transmission shift cable may detach from either the bracket on the transmission shifter or the bracket on the transmission. If the transmission shift cable detaches while the vehicle is being driven, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear, and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver selects the 'PARK' position, the transmission may not be in 'PARK.' If the vehicle is not in the 'PARK' position the vehicle could roll away.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles to make sure the cable is properly seated at the transmission and shifter brackets, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in early August 2014. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 14179; owners may also refer to NHTSA campaign number 14V338000.

2003-2014 Cadillac CTS

2004-2006 Cadillac SRX

GM is recalling 554,328 model-year 2003-2014 Cadillac CTS vehicles manufactured August 16, 2001, to April 28, 2014, and 2004-2006 Cadillac SRX vehicles manufactured March 20, 2003, to August 11, 2006. In these vehicles, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. This defect can affect the safe operation of the air bag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will provide two replacement key rings, and vehicles with slotted keys will receive key inserts, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 14172; owners may also refer to NHTSA campaign number 14V394000.
