Your Ride: 1955 Chevrolet Nomad

Boldride

In 1955, Chevy released the Nomad, coming off its new slogan “The Hot One,” in reference to the boxy new modern look throughout the entire lineup. Like the Bel Air platform on which it sat, the Nomad came loaded with tons of ‘modern’ features, such as carpet, chrome accents and full wheel covers. All of this gave the Nomad consideration of a halo model in the new and improved lineup.

Like many of us, our reader Jon felt the Nomad was something that just couldn’t be replaced- a considerably niche vehicle in today’s market, was at the time a fully-loaded, family mover. With that, Jon picked up his very own Nomad, and gave it a little kick. Here’s his ride:

How did you acquire your ride?

I had been looking through Hemming’s magazine for something unique- different, yet stock. When thumbing through the pages, I was drawn to my first car- a 1956 Chevy and wanted a tri-five, but I didn’t want a sedan or hardtop, I saw too many of them at different shows. I was drawn to a Noman and wanted Gypsy Red.

Then I found an Arizona original in storage in Phoenix, where it lived, un-driven for 17 years. I have now owned the Nomad for 14 years.

Does it have a name?

I have never named it, the family just calls it “The 55.”

How do you feel when you drive it?

When driving it I feel comfortable, relaxes, sometimes taking me back, but all the thumbs up I get bring me back to the present. It stands out. I like to stand out.

What would you change about your car, if anything?

I have rebuilt the car but it still has original paint and interior. I guess my next investment would be a new “old style” interior. The paint needs some touching up after 58 years but it’s mirror-like over 99% of the body.

What have you done to make it a bolder ride?

The short list includes: a 383 cu. inch procharged-nitrous V8, race prepared 700R automatic transmission, currie 9-inch rear end with 3.70 gears, lowered 2-inches, torque thrust, chrome wheels, 4-wheel electric disc brakes, power steering, and an Arizona requirement- vintage A/C.

Dream accessory for it and why?

Not sure I have one. It is perfect as it is. The car is cherry!
