Second-Generation BRZ Coming, Says Boss Of Subaru’s Parent Company
Recently, senior Toyota engineer Tetsuya Tada, the man responsible for the GT 86 and Toyota’s future sports cars, said that it was possible the Japanese automaker chooses BMW instead of Subaru to help develop its next-generation GT 86. This led to speculation that there might not be a second generation of the GT 86’s Subaru twin, the BRZ.
Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, the president of Subaru parent company Fuji Heavy Industries, has now come out pledging that a second-generation BRZ will be launched, and that the car will be developed with Toyota as the project wouldn’t be viable if Subaru had to work alone.
"It's not going to be just one generation," Yoshinaga told Automotive News (subscription required).
Sales of both the BRZ and the GT 86 have been low. In the U.S., just 4,295 BRZs have been sold through June, while 7,662 examples of the FR-S (our version of the GT 86) have been sold. Substantially updated versions of both cars are believed to be coming for the 2016 model year, so hopefully this will help sales.
