A horror crash at the opening round of the VLN race series held at the Nürburgring left one spectator dead and several others injured. The crash, which took place yesterday, involved the number 23 Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 driven by 2011’s Nissan GT Academy winner Jann Mardenborough.

As the video from Grid.Media confirms, Mardenborough’s car became airborne near the poignantly named ‘Flugplatz’ section of the Nürburgring (Flugplatz is German for “airfield”), where it’s quite common for cars to lift because of a sharp hill that’s followed by a sudden drop. Once airborne, Mardenborough’s car flipped before hitting a barrier and landing on its roof in a spectator area.
