NHRA Northwest Nationals: Herrera's Streak StoppedNHRA/National Dragster
  • Chase Van Sant records wire-to-wire victory over Pro Stock Motorcycle dominator Gaige Herrera.

  • First round that took 3 hours, 37 minutes to complete produced several nitro records.

  • Seattle drag strip has special memories for Pro Stock runner-up Dallas Glenn.

Gaige Herrera's all-time record 11-event winning streak in Pro Stock Motorcycle came to an end at the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways near Seattle on Sunday.

Chase Van Sant scored his first victory in his 20th start and the first victory for new White Alligator Racing team owner Tim Kulungian – all while becoming the one to stop the record-setting run of reigning champion Herrera.

Van Sant, 27, last year’s NHRA rookie of the year, also earned his first head-to-head victory against Herrera in seven tries, including this second meeting in a final round.

That snapped Herrera’s streak of 11 victories that dated back to last season.

Top Fuel’s Steve Torrence End Drought

Capco Dragster driver Steve Torrence was a 54-time winner coming into Seattle. But the four-time series champion capped a one-year drought Sunday to improve to 55, tying reigning champion Doug Kalitta for fourth-best in Top Fuel history.

“Man, I tell you what, you take these things for granted when you get them pretty often. We're taking this one home to my new baby girl. It’s my wife’s (Natalie’s) birthday. It’s been a while. Heck, I’m out of breath and didn’t do nothing but hit the gas [four] times,” he said immediately following his final-round victory against Shawn Langdon.

“This is pretty cool, man. One year to the day,” Torrence said. “Wasn’t sure if we were going to win one of these for a while.”

John Force Racing Duo Has Results That’ll Please Boss

With team owner John Force on the mend from his June 23 high-speed racing accident near Richmond, Va., he surely had a vicarious thrill from his drivers, Funny Car ace Austin Prock and Top Fuel-driving daughter Brittany Force.

Event winner Prock remained on a roll in his Cornwell Tools Camaro this weekend, extending his season-long dominance with his eighth No. 1 qualifying position in the Funny Car class, a fourth straight victory in the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge bonus race, and scored his fifth straight semifinal-or-better performance. That eighth top qualifier matched the most since 2019, by Robert Hight – the driver Prock is substituting for at JFR this year.

In the Top Fuel class, Brittany Force claimed the No. 3 starting position, opening what she called “a big weekend” with optimism. She hadn’t been in her dragster since June 23, opting to stay with her father and her family as he recovers from his accident. She missed only one race, at Norwalk, Ohio.

Before she lost to Tony Schumacher in the first round Sunday, she said, “To be able to team back up with Austin Prock and carry Flav-R-Pac [livery] is a huge deal.” Washington State businessman Flav-R-Pac owner Frank Tiegs, who sponsored her and this event, passed away this winter. And Force said, “We’re proud to carry him with us here in Seattle and let the whole family know that they are forever our partners, forever our teammates.

“It feels really good just to be back with this team, in this car, with Flav-R-Pac this weekend. So, very proud of that. Just to get back with this team and this community... They have supported my dad and my family through this entire thing,” she said Friday. “And it has been tough. But we wouldn’t have been able to do it without all of them. So thank you, everyone.”

Track Records Fall

Doug Kalitta recorded the quickest and fastest Top Fuel pass at Seattle with his 3.670-second, 337.41-mph victory over Billy Torrence in the first round of eliminations Sunday. The previous records were 3.685 (Antron Brown, 2016) and 334.73 (Brittany Force, 2023)

And Bob Tasca III clocked a 338.51-mph run in a first-round victory over higher-qualified Chad Green to post the fastest Funny Car speed at Pacific Raceways and 10th fastest in Funny Car history. But Tasca’s race day was short-lived. He lost to J.R. Todd in the quarterfinals. The speed record had stood since 2016, when Jack Beckman registered 334.15. Del Worsham, who today owns the team that fields Alexis De Joria and does the tuning, still possesses the elapsed-time record (3.832 seconds) he set in August 2016.

Pro Stock Motorcycle saw a Matt Smith trio rewrite both ends of the track record at least twice. At the start of the weekend, they belonged to Gaige Herrera (6.729 seconds) and Hector Arana fiBut Jianna Evaristo trumped that Sunday with a 6.733, 201.52, but she didn’t have it for long. Matt Smith topped them all with a 6.709, 202.64.

Pro Stock Racer Glenn’s Homecoming Tinged With Tragic Memory

For Pro Stock points leader and finalist Dallas Glenn, the NHRA Northwest Nationals is a homecoming. His return to suburban-Seattle Covington, Wash., one exit east of the multipurpose motorsports facility, overall is a happy one. But he can’t help but think about his grandfather, who passed away on this track when the rising NHRA star was in elementary school.

“I think I was seven, six or seven,” when his grandfather passed away on this track at the top end, Glenn said.

His grandfather had raced a 1955 wagon, then spent 10 to 15 years with Dallas Glenn’s dad Steve, rebuilding it. The Pro Stock driver remembered, “And the first time he had taken it out, he had a heart attack, like his third run in the car at the top end of the track. Just before he exited the track, he had a heart attack and passed away.”

Steve Glenn raced that wagon this weekend in Super Street competition. He won his first-round match Saturday but fouled out in the second round.

“This track's always going to be special to us,” Dallas Glenn said. “I grew up racing here. The first time I ever went down a dragstrip was here. I won my first races here, my first Wally here. So everything's always been pretty special here. I'd really love to win in Pro Stock here.”

He used to race an El Camino, and he said, “I used to bracket race it here on weekends, and I would drive it to the track and drive it home at night. I have it in North Carolina now. I still race it. I raced it a few weeks ago.”
