NY to hold free workshops to help equity entrepreneurs get marijuana licenses
New York entrepreneurs impacted by the overcriminalization of cannabis now have help in applying for the state’s first recreational marijuana retail licenses through a series of free virtual workshops.
The “Get Ready, Get Set” workshops were announced earlier this week by the state’s Office of Cannabis Management, with the first event in the series scheduled for Tuesday, May 17.
The workshop series includes both learning sessions for equity-entrepreneurs interested in applying for Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensary (CAURD) Licenses and the organizations that work with them, as well listening sessions focused on obtaining feedback on ensuring equity in New York’s growing cannabis industry.
“We are building an industry for New Yorkers: for people stopped and frisked and convicted for carrying a plant, for small farmers struggling to compete with mega-corporations, for those who have been shut out of other industries for reasons beyond their control,” said Chris Alexander, executive director of the Office of Cannabis Management, in a press release.
The workshops are part of the Seedling Opportunity Initiative, which was announced by Gov. Kathy Hochul earlier this year to ensure adult-use cannabis is grown by New York farmers and sold by entrepreneurs impacted by decades of overcriminalization of cannabis.

In order to qualify for the initiative, those entrepreneurs seeking CAURD licenses must have a cannabis-related conviction that occurred prior to March 31, 2021, when the Marijuana Regulation and Tax Act (MRTA) was passed, or have had a close family member with such a conviction. They also must have experience as a business owner in the state.
