Ohio State football is wearing alternate, Color Rush scarlet jerseys. Here's a look at past OSU alternates

The Ohio State football team will wear a jersey combo that they’ve never worn before when they take on the Penn State Nittany Lions at 7:30 p.m. Saturday inside Ohio Stadium.

The hope is that the Nike Color Rush scarlet jerseys match all the shirts inside the Horseshoe as Ohio State is pushing fans to “Scarlet the Shoe” against Penn State.

The jerseys should pop out like tie on a fancy suit. While the helmets will be the same, the jerseys will be scarlet tops and scarlet pants and even scarlet shoes.

Ohio State has done alternate jerseys before, but this look -- perhaps a bloody ode to Halloween on Sunday -- is one they’ve yet to wear.

On ESPN College GameDay, co-host Lee Corso picked the Buckeyes, citing the all scarlet jerseys.

Ohio State teased the look on Twitter earlier this week:

Here's what the Shoe could look like on Saturday:

While Ohio State is no Oregon, which ironically is the only team to beat the Buckeyes entering Week 9, Ohio State has had some different jerseys over the years.

Let's take a look.

Ohio State football alternate jersey history

The first time wearing an alternate jersey was in 2009 against Michigan. The Buckeyes won 21-10.

A year later, Ohio State beat Michigan 37-7 wearing scarlet tops and helmets and grey pants.

On Oct. 29, 2011, Ohio State upset No. 12 Wisconsin wearing alternate jerseys:

In 2012, Urban Meyer became the coach and Ohio State went back to the alternate look against Michigan. They won 26-21.

That same season, Ohio State again wore those alternates, but this time they wore white.

Ohio State wore the similar alternate jerseys in losses to Clemson in the 2014 Orange Bowl and at home to Virginia Tech in 2014. They went back to the white versions against Penn State on Oct. 25 and won 31-24 in overtime.

In the 2015 Allstate Sugar Bowl against Alabama, Ohio State wore Nike Diamond Quest uniforms to honor the 1968 national championship team. They won, obviously.

They wore the scarlet version against Oregon a few days later to win the first College Football Playoff championship.

The Buckeyes wildest alternate jersey may have come on Oct. 17, 2015 against Penn State. The Buckeyes wore all black. No.1 Ohio State won 38-10.

In 2016, against Nebraska, No. 6 Ohio State beat the No. 10 Cornhuskers 62-3. The jerseys were, uh, different.

Maybe it's not a surprise that Ohio State is wearing alternate jerseys against Penn State in 2021. Because they've done so before. In 2017, Ohio State went grey in a 39-38 win.

They wore similar jerseys but white against Michigan that season. They won 31-20.

Ohio State wore the all-black jerseys and helmets twice more, once against Nebraska in 2018 and against Michigan in 2019. They modified their 1968 throwback jerseys in the 2021 playoff games earlier this year.

Will Ohio State wear alternate jerseys again in 2021?

The Buckeyes announced their Penn State jerseys very earlier this month but have not announced any other games wearing their traditional look:

A game time for the Ohio State-Nebraska game will be announced on Sunday.

The Buckeyes will face the Cornhuskers at noon, 3:30 p.m. or 4 p.m., according to a team spokesman. The network is to be determined.

Nebraska played Purdue on Saturday.
