Oklahoma State football adds QB Alan Bowman from Michigan via transfer portal

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State’s newest quarterback is quite familiar with the Big 12. In fact, he’s had a good bit of success at Boone Pickens Stadium.

The Cowboys landed a commitment from former Texas Tech gunslinger Alan Bowman, who spent the last two seasons at Michigan before entering the transfer portal in December.

Bowman, who has one year of eligibility remaining, announced his decision on Twitter on Monday afternoon.

Originally from Grapevine, Texas, Bowman made 16 starts and threw for more than 5,000 yards over three seasons at Texas Tech from 2018-20. He appeared in seven games and attempted 11 passes the last two years as a backup at Michigan.

Bowman has a career completion percentage of 67.1%, throwing for 5,329 yards with 34 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

Bowman beat OSU at BPS as a true freshman in 2018, completing 35 of 46 passes (76.1%) for 397 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-17 upset. In 2020, Bowman was on the losing side of a shootout in Stillwater, throwing for 384 yards and three touchdowns in a 50-44 loss.

The 6-foot-3, 217-pound Bowman, who turns 23 in March, will be on campus for spring practice to compete for the Cowboys’ starting job.

Should he win it over a young trio of young players — redshirt freshman Garret Rangel, redshirt sophomore Gunnar Gundy and true freshman Zane Flores — Bowman’s skillset would force a bit of a change in the OSU offense.

He is not the mobile style of quarterback OSU has had the past five seasons with Taylor Cornelius and Spencer Sanders. Including sacks, Bowman has rushed 46 times for minus-9 yards in his career.

Still, Bowman is a more proven passer than anyone the Cowboys have on campus, and one year of him behind center would give the young players an extra season to grow into the offense before battling for the starting job in 2024.

OSU head coach Mike Gundy and his staff have been rather picky in what they searched for in a transfer portal quarterback — a need that arose when Sanders entered the portal on Dec. 5.

OSU remained focused on an experienced veteran who could bridge the gap to the next young quarterback.

Bowman’s best season was his true freshman year at Tech, when he completed 227 of 327 passes for 2,638 yards with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions, playing in just eight games because of injury.

He suffered a partially collapsed lung that caused him to miss four games that season. He appeared in three games while dealing with a shoulder injury the next season, then played eight more games in 2020 before transferring to Michigan.
