If you're thinking about adding a charming, fun-to-drive Eighties hatch to your collection but want something with provenance, we have the car for you. This 1981 Alfa Romeo GTV-6, formerly owned by Indy 500 winner and Formula One champion Mario Andretti, is for sale.
Andretti, America's most famous racing driver, drove for Alfa Romeo's F1 team in 1981, appearing in GTV-6 marketing materials and advertisements. So it makes sense he'd be given a road car from the brand to drive around. Original documents show the car being delivered to Andretti with 175 miles on the clock. According to Autoblog, he kept it for a full year.
The car itself, finished in Grigio over tan leather interior, looks to be in immaculate condition. The paint, glass, body, and cabin are said to be original, and with just under 36,000 miles on the clock, we're inclined to believe that. Pictures included in the listing show a clean, rust-free underbody and a healthy-looking engine bay.
This ex-Andretti Alfa failed to sell during RM Sotheby's "Driving into Summer" May 2020 event, earning a highest bid of just $28,000. The sellers at LBI Limited are looking for $48,000 to part ways with the car now. The dealer notes over $7000 in recent maintenance work has been done to keep it in tip-top shape.
Would you pay nearly $48,000 to own a low-mileage GTV-6 that used to be owned by Mario Andretti himself? Let us know in the comments.
