The I-Pace Is Jaguar's All-Electric Vision of the Future

From Road & Track

Earlier this year, Jaguar introduced its first SUV, the F-Pace. For the LA Auto Show this year, Jaguar's just introduced a new SUV concept called the I-Pace. But while you can see clear F-Pace influences, the I-Pace differs in one key way-it's all electric.

Yes, the I-Type may borrow heavily from the XE, the F-Pace, and the F-Type, but mechanically, it's a completely different vehicle. It uses motors mounted on the front and rear axles to make 400 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque, enough to launch the all-wheel-drive CUV to 60 mph in about four seconds.

Paired with a 90kWh battery pack, Jaguar says the I-Pace is good for 220 miles on a single charge. Using 50kW DC fast charging, it only takes an hour and a half to reach an 80-percent charge, and a full charge only takes two hours.

Without a conventional drivetrain to work around, Jaguar claims it was able to design the I-Pace to be lower, sportier, and more aerodynamic, while still maintaining a spacious cabin. The automaker also promises the I-Pace will still handle like a Jaguar thanks to its double wishbone front and Integral Link rear suspension.

Most importantly, though, this isn't a pie-in-the-sky concept that will never see the light of day. We'll see the production version of this five-seater sometime next year, and the first I-Pace will roll off the line in 2018.
