Pascal Wehrlein Finishes Strong to Win ABB FIA Formula E Championship in London
Pascal Wehrlein of TAG Heuer Porsche won the 2023-24 ABB FIA Formula E Drivers' World Championship in the London E-Prix finale, overcoming rivals Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy of Jaguar TCS Racing.
Strategic Attack Mode activations played a significant role, with a late collision and puncture for Cassidy eventually leaving the title fight to Wehrlein and Evans.
Oliver Rowland secured the race victory on Sunday, while Wehrlein's second-place finish secured his Drivers’ Championship.
Jaguar won the Teams' World Championship, its first top-tier motorsport title since 1991, as well as the Manufacturers’ Trophy.
Pascal Wehrlein of TAG Heuer Porsche came up big when it counted, closing out the season-ending Saturday-Sunday doubleheader with a win and a runner-up finish to win the 2023-24 ABB FIA Formula E championship on Sunday in London.
Wehrlein came into the weekend in a tight battle with Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy—the three were separated by just seven points. Wehrlein's Saturday win was worth 25 points, while he earned 18 on Sunday for finishing second.
Meanwhile, Evans finished the Season 10 campaign in London with finishes of runner-up on Saturday and third on Sunday. Cassidy fell out of the championship picture by finishing seventh and 17th.
The championship for Wehrlein is his first in the Formula E all-electric open-wheel series.
"It feels good," Wherlein said. "I don't know what to say, it's definitely not expected. You turn up, you have a chance. But I always believed in it. The last couple of weeks, every day before my day was starting and my day finished, I said, I can do this. We can do this.
"Even if the last couple of races, the performance was not that strong and I was struggling a bit with the car and what I felt in the car. I said, It doesn't matter. I could see it. I taught myself every day, and I'm just super proud of everyone in the team."
As for season runner-up Evans, there was some consolation in that his Jaguar TCS Racing team won its first team championship.
“I want to be happy for the team for winning the Teams’ Championship, but I feel like we’ve been off our game on this side this weekend and also yeah bit surprised at some of the calls made against me today," Evans said. "A lot of discussions to be held.
“This one was the most realistic and it was mine for a bit. I feel like my own team were working against me at one point, so that’s not nice.”
