Thanks to a pair of Apple AirPods, a man is under arrest for the alleged theft of a 2023 Ferrari 812 GTS worth approximately $575,000. The investigation also tied the suspect and another man to additional motor vehicle thefts, according to police.

The Waterbury Police Department of Waterbury, Connecticut were notified about the stolen Ferrari, which had been taken from the town of Greenwich, on September 16. According to a report from local news outlet Republican-American, the police had some technological help locating the vehicle; the Italian supercar's owner had left a pair of AirPods in the vehicle, and as such was able to track their location to Waterbury.

Authorities said the suspect, 22-year-old Dion Schontten, of Waterbury, was known to members of the department's Auto Theft Task Force who pulled up next to the Ferrari at a gas station in an unmarked police cruiser. Upon noticing the officers, police said Schontten drove the Ferrari into the cop car, then climbed out of the car and made a break for it under his own power. The Ferrari sustained slight damage in the impact, but was still drivable.

It was then that another Apple product played a role in solving the case. While Schontten may have run from the scene, he left his iPhone in the car. According to the arrest warrant, the iPhone was then linked to Schontten; it reportedly contained text messages and social media posts showing pictures of the inside of the Ferrari.

It was only on September 26 that Schotten was arrested, however, when Waterbury police discovered a 2023 Acura TLX recently stolen from New York and captured him and a reported accomplice, who has been identified as Keon Webster, 18, of Waterbury. Police said the suspects allegedly took turns driving the stolen Acura. Webster also had an open arrest warrant from an investigation involving a stolen Audi S8.

Schontten and Webster were each charged with larceny of a motor vehicle — Schontten's second offense and Webster's seventh. Schontten is being held on $150,000 bond, while Webster is held on $300,000 bond.
