According to local authorities, earlier this month, a man stole a Chevrolet Corvette in Virginia and led police on a chase into North Carolina at speeds topping 100 mph — only for the pursuit to end when the driver lost control, hit a guardrail and destroyed the car. The alleged thief and his female passenger were then found hiding in a nearby body of water, according to Scotland Neck Police Department.

Police identified the vehicle as a Corvette Stingray, and based on images they released, it appears to be a C7-generation 'Vette. Authorities identified Zyrell Webb, a 24-year-old from Fayetteville, North Carolina, as the suspect.

According to their account on the Scotland Neck Police Department Facebook page, the cops were initially unaware that the car was stolen; a department sergeant spotted the Corvette speed and attempted to pull him over. However, instead of pulling over, Webb allegedly sped off, quickly hitting triple-digit speeds.

The chase proceeded through several counties in North Carolina, eventually involving a number of other local law enforcement agencies. Authorities say the pursuit ended abruptly, however, when the Corvette crashed into a guardrail. Despite the totaled car, Webb and his passenger were reportedly not done running; they allegedly fled on foot and ducked into a nearby swamp. The Edgecombe County Emergency Management deployed a drone to search for them, and it picked up the images of two people hiding in the water. No significant injuries were reported.

Webb already had an extensive criminal history, according to the police, but he is now facing a slew of additional charges that range from felony fleeing to elude arrest and felony possession of a stolen vehicle to leaving the scene of an accident and, unsurprisingly, speeding.
