A nonprofit group operating in the Portland, Oregon metro area has racked up a big victory after helping police arrest a theft ringleader. While many feel there’s nothing they can do about the current theft trend, we keep seeing groups like this as well as individual citizens effectively stem the tide where they live.

Car thief ditches his young son and woman to get away from police.

In this case, PDX Stolen Cars members used social media to catch the head of the car theft ring red handed. Like so many criminals, Aric Wade Adams allegedly took to social media to not only brag about stealing vehicles, sometimes at gunpoint, but to also offer them for sale, reports KOIN.

It’s amazing how many people think they can post whatever on social media without repercussions, especially when it comes to illegal activities. As the theft ring targeted Dodge muscle cars, Corvettes, Camaros, and the like, it seems the success went to Adams’ head.

Using social media posts, PDX members were able to connect Adams to thefts from Sacramento to Seattle. They then took that information to the Multnomah County Auto Theft task force, who in turn arrested Adams.

That of course doesn’t solve the car theft problem in the region. But it does help disrupt some of the theft activity, at least for a time. And the situation proves regular citizens can do something about people stealing cars, aiding police who are overloaded with cases and don’t have time to troll social media or otherwise gather evidence on every theft case.

People can also make their rides harder to steal with devices like kill switches, alarms, and even GPS trackers. Surveillance cameras with high definition recordings help with connecting suspects to thefts. And there’s more people can do.
