A 16-year-old Houston boy is being hailed a hero for stepping in harm’s way to protect his stepmother during an armed carjacking. This is what’s so scary about the continued trend of carjackings, despite some trying to argue they’re not a threat to public safety.

Watch a carjacking suspect take cops on a wild chase through Detroit.

It was late on July 23 when the teen and his stepmother were headed to their car after closing at their mutual place of employment. Surveillance footage shows as the woman opens the driver’s door to the car, an armed suspect runs up and holds her at gunpoint.

The teen, sitting in the front passenger seat, doesn’t hesitate. He gets out of the vehicle and comes around behind the carjacker, distracting him. Then he throws a glass bottle at the guy before being shot in the chest.

Both the teen and stepmother scatter after that and the carjacker takes the sedan. Afterwards, we see the teen emerge in the camera’s view, collapsing to the ground as a worker from a nearby sandwich shop and his stepmother try to help.

Thankfully the teen survived after being transported by helicopter to a hospital. While speaking with Fox 26 Houston he seemed to be in good spirits, even showing the bandages where the bullet entered and exited his chest.

As for the carjacker, he led police on a chase for hours afterward. Police took him into custody after he crashed the stolen vehicle. Now he’s facing a long list of charges which thankfully don’t include murder.

Some will have opinions about what the teen did, possibly claiming her provoked the carjacker into shooting him. We think he didn’t want to see his stepmother harmed and so did what he thought was necessary. Sure, some believe if you just hand over your keys you’ll be okay, but we’ve seen cases where it doesn’t play out that way, so you never know.
