Raptor, Meet T. Rex: Ram TRX High-Performance Pickup Is Happening for Real
Ram is going after the Ford F-150 Raptor with a new high-performance off-road pickup. And it’s no coincidence that the Ram also has a dinosaur-inspired name: TRX (like T. rex, get it?). We pretty much knew it was coming, too, because this new badass truck was previewed in 2016 by a concept called the Rebel TRX.
Although head of Ram Mike Manley didn’t provide any concrete details on the TRX at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ five-year-plan presentation, the story almost writes itself. We can make a lot of assumptions about the production model based on the concept. For one, we expect it to look similar, with extra skid plates, huge knobby off-road tires, and auxiliary lights similar to those seen on the Raptor. The key difference, of course, is that the new TRX will be spun from the new 2019 Ram 1500 rather than the outgoing truck that the concept used as its base.
It also seems highly likely that the TRX will use a version of the 707-hp supercharged V-8 engine found in Dodge’s Hellcat models and Jeep’s Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. A Hellcat Ram has been discussed for years now, and the TRX is a perfect opportunity to make this dream a reality.

Given that the TRX is expected to slot in near the top of the Ram lineup, it won’t be cheap. With a clear all-terrain performance bent compared to the mostly appearance-based Ram 1500 Rebel, it may carry a price in the $60,000-to-70,000 range, a big jump over the Rebel’s starting price of $46,340. There’s no word on timing of the Ram TRX other than confirmation that it’ll arrive within the next few years. We think it’ll come sooner rather than later: Raptor mania is in full swing, and it seems like the only thing that can pump the brakes on the fun is a T. rex.
