The Nevera R Shows Rimac Is Getting SeriousRimac

Much like the Bugatti Veyron before it, the Rimac Nevera is designed more to function as the last word in street-car performance rather than as a track-crushing speed machine. And also much like the Bugatti Veyron before it, Rimac is using its "regular" hypercar as the basis for an even-more-limited run of higher-performance editions. This is the Rimac Nevera R: a lighter and more powerful version of the Croatian EV hypercar designed to reign as the electric king of the track.

At the heart of the Nevera R is a new 108-kWh battery. The fresh pack allows for a bump of more than 200 hp over the regular Nevera, bringing total output up to 2107 hp. That audacious number is just the headliner; it combines with a variety of other performance-oriented changes to make the Nevera R a staggering 3.8 seconds a lap faster than its predecessor around the 3.9-mile Nardo Ring handling circuit.

Other major changes include new Michelin Cup 2 tires and a new generation of all-wheel torque vectoring, designed to optimize the added grip from the new standard rubber. These two things, in concert with the 15% increase in downforce provided by the Nevera R's new aerodynamic elements, increase lateral grip by 5%. Rimac also claims that the car's total understeer is reduced by 10%.

Visually, the Nevera R is most notably differentiated by its massive rear wing. The performance-oriented Rimac also boasts a new diffuser, unique wheels with a staggered size, and a new signature launch color called Nebula Green. Rimac says the interior is customizable; notably, the launch car's cabin features the same shade of green inside as it does on the outside.

The "base" Rimac Nevera holds an enormous collection of records for acceleration and deceleration, but the Nevera R has it beat. The new car's 0–60 mile-per-hour dash remains locked at the same record 1.74-second 0-60 time set by the base car, and the 0–62 mph (or 0–100 kph) remains the same at 1.81 seconds. As speeds get faster, however, the gap between the cars starts to show. The Nevera R's 0–124 mph time is down to 4.38 seconds from 4.42; the 62–124 mph run is down to 2.46 seconds from 2.59, and the 0–186 mph run is down to 8.66 seconds from 9.22.

Most notably, the Rimac Nevera R completes the quarter-mile run in a mere 8.23 seconds. Although that margin is just 2/100ths of a second quicker than its predecessor, the fact remains that it's still a new world record for a production car. The brand has not shared any other acceleration or deceleration figures yet, but top speed is known to be capped at 217 mph in everyday use and 256 mph under manufacturer oversight.

Just 40 examples of the Nevera R will be built. For the record, that number is part of the Nevera's original planned production run of 150 cars, so Rimac has not increased the total allotment of Nevera models that will be built over the model's lifespan.
