Sam Mayer Was Shocked to See This Driver Confront Him after Xfinity Race
Cole Custer's first win secured the points leader's spot in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs.
Contact from Sam Mayer ended Shane van Gisbergen's chance of a third top-10 oval finish.
Sam Mayer found himself once again in a post-race altercation but not with van Gisbergen.
Sam Mayer was confronted after the race on pit row after the NASCAR Xfinity Series Race at Pocono Raceway, but not by who he thought would be angry with him.
With eight laps remaining, Shane van Gisbergen was running 10th when he was sent around when Mayer misjudged the space in front of him. Mayer would report over the radio that it was his fault, and there was a potential problem with the brake pedal. This was the only move of the race that Mayer believes he needs to apologize for; Chandler Smith disagrees.

After the late-race incident, van Gisbergen ended up finishing as the last car on the lead lap in 31st. Mayer would hold on to 10th, and before he could exit, he was confronted by Smith. While there were no on-track incidents between the two highlighted in the broadcast, Smith was adamant that Mayer was racing him too aggressively.

"He can't handle being raced hard," Mayer told NASCAR on NBC after his altercation with Smith. "That's the last person I expected to be upset with me today."
Mayer was more focused on owning up to his mistake with van Gisbergen than defending himself against Smith.
"Huge apologies to the No. 97 guys," Mayer said. "I just messed up; I drove in a little too hard, and the brake pedal started fading a little bit, and I didn't account for that. Chandler, I don't know, not my problem."
"He was saying that I put it on his door multiple times," Mayer continued. "If you watch racing you know that that happens every lap. I'm not really sure why he's mad about that. It's definitely frustrating to see him come to my window like that and not give me a chance to talk back."
Smith finished 15th after running in the high teens most of the afternoon, in contrast to van Gisbergen, who lost out on a potential top-10 finish as he continues to learn and grow on ovals.
Frontstretch met up with van Gisbergen after the race to ask how he felt about another unfortunate ending to an oval race.
We just got run over by Sam [Mayer]," van Gisbergen said. "I'm sure he didn't mean it, but it's gutting, and then at the end, some wobble just took me out again."
