A surprise hit when it first appeared in 2004, the xB served notice that Toyota knew what it was doing in launching the Scion brand, meant to appeal to younger buyers. The first "box" car, the xB spawned a wave of imitators including the Honda Element and Kia Soul, which have carved into its market share and diminished what was once a singular brand. The xB continues to claim hold to its trademark boxy design, though, looking like an ice chest on wheels, though ostensible upgrades have cut into some of the uniqueness of the first edition, which is looking more and more like a collector's item as the years pass. Performance and handling are adequate given what the car is designed to do, though gas mileage isn't really good enough, and no one seems to like the interior, which is a confusing mish-mash of various design elements. Overall, the xB is a model that had its shining moment, but seems to be headed somewhat gracefully toward the exit, as Scions get smaller and sportier. See more... See Less

Reviews and Ratings
Pros Cons
Comfort of the rear seats - a lot of space Highway fuel economy is terrible at 24 mpg.
Scion is very roomy for small car and gets great mileage. Rear seats do not remove for more cargo space
Interior room - more interior headroom than tundra Suspension is too rigid, firm
The image - very attractive vehicle Headlights do not go off by themselves
Gauges that calculate mph, miles to empty, etc. Excessive wind noise when windows are lowered, especially in rear.
Ease of getting in/ out of vehicle Rough shifting transmission in low gears
Leather & suede seat covers with accent stitching Can be hard to handle at highway speeds when windy
Reputation for quality & longevity Sun visor doesnt cover enough of side window
Visibility - windows are big and the view is nice I wish you could automatically open back hatch
Cargo capacity - huge, and the square shape lends to fitting big items in Transmission: only 4 speed - need 6+ for fuel economy
