Sebastian Vettel’s Racing Days Might Not Be Over

Sebastian Vettel says he is interested in returning to motorsport with a drive in the World Endurance Championship.

During the Japanese Grand Prix this past weekend, Vettel was approached by German media and asked about rumors that he would be testing a Porsche 963 LMDh prototype with Jota in October.

"It's something I have in the back of my mind. Nothing is signed yet. I still have plenty of time,” Vettel told Auto Motor und Sport.

Last year, Vettel announced he would retire from Formula 1 at the end of the 2022 season to spend more time with his family and pursue his other passions.

Yet, Vettel has remained relatively active in F1 this year, appearing in the paddock at both the Singapore and Japanese grands prix. He also drove his 2011 Red Bull RB7 F1 car at the Nurburgring in early September. It is clear that racing hasn’t fully worked its way out of his system.

Vettel’s prolific 15-year stint at the top flight of motor racing netted him four Drivers’ Championships, 53 wins, and several records including youngest World Champion in F1- one that will likely never be beaten with the sport’s current licensing requirements.

The World Endurance Championship is a fitting coda for the careers of many former F1 drivers. Jenson Button has already said he will be on the WEC grid next year, adding to the star-studded cast of endurance racing converts that currently includes Antonio Giovinazzi, Brendan Hartley, Kamui Kobayashi, Sebastian Buemi, and Stoffel Vandoorne.
