The deal is the largest for any professional sports franchise, eclipsing the $2.4 billion shelled out by billionaire hedge fund manager Steven Cohen to purchase the New York Mets baseball team in 2021.

Hamilton tweeted about the deal:

“Excited to join an incredible group of owners and become a part of the Broncos story!! Honoured to work with a world-class team and serve as an example of the value of more diverse leadership across all sports. Roscoe already thinks he made the team.”

The deal was approved at a league meeting in Minnesota, where Walton, his daughter, Carrie Walton Penner, and her husband, Greg Penner, were introduced to the media. Walton, who is the eldest son of Walmart founder Sam Walton, has an estimated worth of $60 million and now becomes the wealthiest owner in the NFL.

Others in the ownership group include Starbucks board chairperson Mellody Hobson and former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Denver becomes just the second NFL team to change ownership in the past decade. The Carolina Panthers were sold to David Tepper in 2017 for a reported $2.2 billion.
