Severe weather in Upstate SC: Spartanburg County under severe thunderstorm watch

Thunderstorms are rolling through much of the Upstate.

Spartanburg County is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 10 p.m. Rain and showers are in the forecast until 7 a.m. Friday.

Greenville and Anderson counties are under a flash flood warning until 8 p.m. Thursday.

Showers with embedded thunderstorms are expected to develop and increase in coverage as they track across the region this evening into tonight in advance of a cold front, according to the Weather Service.

A few thunderstorms will become strong to severe with damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes being the main threats.

Localized flash flooding is also possible where repeated heavy downpours track, mainly this evening into the overnight, according to the Weather Service.

A watch means conditions are favorable for inclement weather, while a warning means a storm is imminent.

Other South Carolina counties in the watch area include Cherokee, Laurens, Fairfield, Chester, Greenwood, Newberry, Union, Edgefield, Lancaster, Saluda and York.

This week began stormy Monday, with thunderstorms, over an inch of rainfall and a 200-yard-wide EF-1 tornado with 110 mph winds that uprooted trees and damaged roofs of homes along a 5.3-mile path near Chesnee.
