Shades of IROC: SpeedTour All-Star Race at Lime Rock Promises to Be Absolute Blast
Okay, so it's not your father's—or your grandfather's—International Race of Champions.
That doesn't mean, however, that Saturday's SpeedTour All-Star Race at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Conn., won't be an absolute blast.
The race will cap a Friday and Saturday of celebrating IROC's past as an almost legendary racing all-star series that ran from 1973-2006 and featured top racers from nearly every major series, including Formula 1, IndyCar, NASCAR and the short-track world. The weekend will include autograph sessions and chances to see old IROC cars from the series' past.
The weekend's festivities will be highlighted by a race pairing all-stars past and present being paired with current stars of the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli and SVRA’s TA2 Club in a 60-minute tag-team affair.
The winner-take-all exhibition is paying $50,ooo to the winning team.
Special guest drivers in the loaded 20-car field include 1985 Indy 500 winner Danny Sullivan, four-time NASCAR Cup Series race winner Ken Schrader, four-time NASCAR Truck Series champion Ron Hornaday, former NASCAR and Formula 1 driver Scott Speed, 2000 NASCAR Cup champion Bobby Labonte, 19-time NASCAR Cup race winner Greg Biffle, 18-time NASCAR Cup race winner Ryan Newman and two-time NASCAR Truck champion Todd Bodine.
No fewer than seven drivers in the field have won at Lime Rock, including Paul Menard, Thomas Merrill, Andy Lally, Boris Said, Ron Fellows, Geoff Brabham and Schrader.
Three females are in the field, the all-female pairing of multiple-time Indy 500 starter Pippa Mann and Trans Am great Amy Ruman. Hailie Deegan from NASCAR and a three-time champ in the Lucas Oil Off-Road Pro Series is paired with 15-year-old Ben Maier.
In total, the field accounts for 11 NASCAR championships, an IndyCar championship, 13 road racing titles, three USAC championships, for Rallycross titles and three off-road championships.
Labonte won an IROC title in 2001.
One of the pairings to watch is the father-son tandem of Boris Said and Boris Said Jr. This will mark the second time they've driven together, the first being in a Trans Am race at Virginia International Raceway in 2022.
Drivers will share either Chevrolet Camaros or Ford Mustangs from the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series Am Series.
Saturday's race will be broadcast live Saturday at 1 p.m., on MavTV.
