The ad indicates this car was built by a legendary car customizer and featured in a major movie.

When it comes to custom vehicles, lead sleds are about as cool as a car can get. The most popular classics to use as the basis for a lead sled is the 1950 Mercury, and this purple, flamed Merc' could very well have an interesting and noteworthy history.

According to the listing, this '50 Merc' was created by George Barris, and while no documentation was provided to back this up, the overall style and quality makes that claim credible. The body has been chopped and channeled with a frenched headlights and a louvered hood. The paint job features 11 coats of Candy Pearl Purple with beautiful ghost flames and complemented by a white vinyl top, and this color combination carries over perfectly into the fully custom interior.

In addition to claims of the car's ties to Barris, the ad also says this car was used in the 1986 movie, Cobra, starring Sylvester Stallone. If that is the case, the Mercury has been extensively modified since its movie days as the car driven by Lt. Cobra in that movie was painted black and had more of a factory appearance.

Under that long, louvered hood sits a 400 cubic-inch Pontiac V8 paired to a GM Turbo 400 automatic transmission. Whether you're looking for a show car or a cruiser, this Mercury will be a fun car to drive with its disc brakes, air ride suspension and air conditioning.

Even if it wasn't built by Barris or driven by Stallone, this is still an incredible build. Classic Cars of Sarasota has this lead sled listed for $55,900, but you can click HERE to make an offer on it.
