Come down to Goodells for a week full of carnival rides, animals and plain old, family-friendly fun.

The St. Clair County 4-H and Youth Fair opens at 9 a.m. on Monday and runs through Saturday. The fair is set to stay open until around midnight daily, depending on what time evening shows finish. The fair is located at Goodells County Park.

“It’s just a time for great family entertainment,” said Rob Usakowski, the fair board president.

Admission is $10 per person or $25 for a vehicle and all its occupants. Week passes cost $60 until July 17 and $70 for the rest of the fair. Passes can be bought at the fair entrance or beforehand at the Goodells County Park Office.

New attractions this year include a blacksmith demonstration by Garrett Waterman on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and an educational series from the Ziibiwing Center in Mount Pleasant. The series will include a presentation, pow wow and song and dance performance on Wednesday. It will be presented by members of the Anishinabe Tribe.

Additionally, Figure 8 RWD and FWD Stock Derby events on Saturday are set to start at 4 p.m., rather than later in the evening like the rest of the week’s events. This means the fair will close earlier than in the past.

“Last year, it rained on the last day, so we had to close a bit early,” Usakowski said. “It worked out really nice for those of us operating and the kids who were showing to get out a little earlier than in the past.”

Events for the rest of the week include a rodeo, monster truck derby and multiple 4-H animal exhibits. Livestock shows will take place on Monday, with the livestock auction set for Thursday.

The Sherbeck Family Carnival will be bringing rides to the fair again this year. A Mega Pass for the carnival, which allows for unlimited rides for the week of the fair, cost $70 before July 18. After that, they will cost $80. Usakowski said he is unsure if there will be new ride at the carnival this year.

“We won’t know that until they show up with everything,” he said.

4-H is expected to have nearly 600 exhibits this year. This includes everything from art to animal exhibits. Usakowski said participants in the 4-H show will have been working on their exhibits for the past year.

“For a lot of these kids, this isn’t a one-year thing,” he said. “They’re constantly working on them and seeing how they can improve.”
