Los Angeles is known for its lengthy police chases, thanks in part to pursuit policies for law enforcement agencies and also the extensive freeway system in the area. Many times these chases end with a suspect cornering themselves or realizing they can’t keep running. But one guy in an Alfa Romeo Giulia recently deployed a crafty trick we’ve seen used effectively before.

Watch a Mustang hit a Corvette while leaving a Cars and Coffee event.

The chase started after police ran the plate on the Alfa Romeo and it returned as stolen. Obviously, the driver didn’t want to pull over and talk things out with police, so a traffic stop was ineffective.

As the suspect pushed the Italian luxury sedan to high speeds in thick traffic, not only were ground units still in pursuit, a helicopter overhead started tracking everything from high above. However, our suspect obviously knew about the eye in the sky since it kept spotlighting where the Giulia was traveling.

Knowing his every move was being watched, the guy did what we’ve seen others do: head into downtown. The tall buildings make it more difficult for choppers to track the movements of cars, and that alone can act as a defense.

Even more importantly, Downtown Los Angeles is a maze of not only streets and tall buildings, but underground areas and parking garages. The suspect obviously was thinking of that very thing, because shortly after exiting the freeway in the Alfa Romeo, he piloted it right into a parking structure.

That move effectively blinded the police helicopter and the news chopper from KCAL. Pursuing police cruisers had given the guy a wide berth, as is often policy with many of the law enforcement agencies, so they weren’t there to catch up and make an arrest.
