Stolen Dodge Challenger Loses Cops After 60-Mile High-Speed Chase
A 2023 Dodge Challenger and the driver who purloined it are on the loose after the muscle car was stolen off the lot of a car dealership in Waterford, Pennsylvania on Monday
Following reports of a triggered alarm at the Humes Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealership on, August 6, a complainant from the dealership alerted Pennsylvania State Police of two missing vehicles—a 2024 Dodge Hornet and a 2023 Dodge Challenger. The red Hornet crossover was located later that day, according to WJET/WFXP; roughly an hour later, officers with the Erie branch of the Pennsylvania State Police reportedly spotted the blue Challenger at the corner of East 6th Street and Ash Street in Waterford and attempted to halt the muscle car.
However, the driver of the Challenger refused to stop, leading the PSP officers on a 35-minute chase spanning 61 miles. (Basic math gives us an average chase speed of 104 mph.) Once the chase crossed state lines into New York, the Pennsylvania State Police were joined by New York State Police troopers and continued pursuit as the suspect headed east on Interstate 90; the New York troopers eventually terminated the chase when they were unable to keep pace with the Challenger, according to Your Erie, at which point the PSP also wound down its chase.
While we don't know which patrol vehicle the New York State Troopers involved were driving, the alleged lack of ability to keep pace suggest the stolen Challenger may be one of the V-8 models. (Humes's website lists five new blue 2023 Challengers for sale in Waterford, four of which are V-8-powered; assuming the dealership hasn't taken the stolen vehicle down from its website yet, it's likely one of those.)
Road & Track has reached out to the Pennsylvania State Police and the Humes Dealership for comment on the theft and chase, but has not heard back from either; the story will be updated accordingly if we hear from either.
Pennsylvania State Police and New York State Troopers are still looking for the Challenger and its driver. Anyone with knowledge of the incident or who may have seen the vehicle is encouraged to to call PSP Erie at (814) 898-1641.
