Stolen Jeep Return Delayed By Insurance Fight

If you’ve ever dealt with an insurance claim, you know the red tape and bureaucracy of the process can be downright maddening. One woman in the Greater Toronto Area in Canada is fighting just such a situation after her Jeep Wrangler was stolen and subsequently recovered yet still hasn’t been returned to her.

Wranglers have been popular theft targets for a long time, in part thanks to their simple and open air nature. Even with modern models sporting modern security, real doors, and glass windows, it’s still an issue.
In this particular case, the woman who owns the Jeep was smart and dropped an AirTag in it. That allowed her to track its location in real time, relay the information to an anti car theft task force member, and for it to be recovered within hours.
Mistakenly, the victim and everyone associated with this woman thought the Jeep would be returned promptly. Six weeks later, the woman and her employers did an interview with Global News to recount the dispute with the insurance company and tow yard that has the recovered vehicle.
We’ve experienced exactly what the fight is about ourselves: the towing company is charging a ton of money for storing the Jeep and the insurance company refuses to pay that much. We imagine a fair number of readers have dealt with this as well.
Ultimately, it’s the little guy who ends up getting crushed in these disputes. After all, the woman who needs the Wrangler to get around doesn’t have it weeks later. Remember, it was recovered within hours.
Why did it need to sit at a tow lot for any amount of time? Probably because of a police department policy. And tow companies know this. They also know a newer vehicle is going to have good insurance coverage and that means money.
We can’t say for sure it’s the case with this situation, but oftentimes what we’ve dealt with is towing companies which believe they can pump insurance carriers for ridiculous sums. Then it becomes a standoff.
The end result is insurance rates get hiked to cover storage fees for stolen cars. It’s a vicious process.
