Florida continues to be one of the best places for weird stories, including this one of a suspect in a stolen Mercedes running from police and getting caught in a swamp. Thankfully there were no alligators involved in the chase or arrest, but bodycam footage of the chase is still pretty heart-pounding.
Woman pulls off the interstate and minutes later her BMW X6 explodes.
According to Port Orange Police Department, officers tracked down a stolen Mercedes which was sitting in an apartment complex parking lot. In the driver’s seat was Ah'lijah Aman Mah'di Balk, age 20 of Daytona Beach.
As officers approached the luxury car with their guns drawn, ordering Balk to put up his hands, the man didn’t comply. The officer whose bodycam footage we’re watching in the beginning opens the front passenger door to pull the suspect out and that’s when Balk puts the vehicle in reverse, knocking the officer over with the open door.
Thankfully the cop wasn’t hurt. However, during the ensuing chase, Balk allegedly hit several police cruisers with the stolen Mercedes. We can hear the one officer state over the radio he was rammed by the suspect twice.
The successful deployment of a Stop Stick deflated some of the Mercedes’ tires, eventually leading to Balk losing control of the car and jumping out. It’s during the foot chase that the guy ends up in a swamp where he’s tackled to the ground and cuffed before being hauled away.
It’s funny how the guy who hit an officer with the stolen Mercedes door and rammed another patrol car twice during the chase suddenly becomes the victim once’s he’s pinned to the ground. We see this so often, with suspects acting like tough guys until they’re caught, suddenly pivoting into simpering poodles, almost like it’s an act.
